How to get there

The maps below give a precise indication of the location of Smithy House and the routes leading to it. We are easy to find from east by following the A75 and turning left at the second roundabout (first if coming from the west) signposted to Castle Douglas. Smithy House is the cottage nearest the town of the row situated on the left-hand side immediately inside the 30 m.p.h. signs, opposite Carlingwark Loch.
Transport from Glasgow Airport to Castle Douglas can be arranged through Glasgow Airport Millennium Taxis.

Dumfries and Galloway is situated in the south-western corner of Scotland, immediately north of the Solway Firth, across which it looks southwards to the English Lake District. Castle Douglas is about 20 miles west of Dumfries, 56 miles east of Stranraer and 55 miles south-east of Ayr. Smithy House is on the south-western outskirts of the town.

Castle Douglas is situated in the heart of Galloway, with Carlisle, Ayr and Stranraer (with its ferries to Northern Ireland) all within an approximate radius of 50 miles, whilst Newcastle and the ferries from Scandinavia are only two hours drive away. The nearest railway station is at Dumfries, about 18 miles away.

The Buchan, a small settlement of traditional Galloway cottages, estimated to be 400 to 500 years old, is situated on the southern outskirts of Castle Douglas, opposite Carlingwark Loch. Smithy House is the northernmost of the cottages, nearest the town, and is easily distinguished by the Bed & Breakfast signs at the end of the drive.

Please enter either by the drive between the two "Bed & Breakfast" signs, or by turning between the end of our garden wall and the green area. If using this latter entrance, it will be necessary to open the gate to drive into our premises. Please note that the gate is NOT locked. It is not necessary to close the gate when you have driven in. This will be done for you.
Please do NOT enter The Buchan by the southernmost house immediately inside the 30 m.p.h. limit signs, even if it is possible when this route is not blocked by parked cars.
